Comment on The Strange History of ‘Mad Honey’ by Harris Moore https://modernfarmer.com/2014/09/strange-history-hallucinogenic-mad-honey/#comment-75611 Fri, 30 Aug 2024 05:25:01 +0000 http://modernfarmer.com/?p=25758#comment-75611 Mad honey, or deli bal, is a fascinating yet perilous substance produced from the nectar of rhododendrons containing grayanotoxin, a natural neurotoxin. While it has been used historically as a tool for intoxication and even as a weapon of war, its allure persists today due to its potent effects and the rich tradition surrounding it. In Turkey’s Black Sea region, this mad honey is consumed in very small amounts for its purported medicinal benefits and unique high, yet it remains a specialty product that requires careful handling. Despite its potential for inducing hallucinations and other serious symptoms if overconsumed, mad honey’s continued presence in Turkish culture and its mystique for adventurous eaters highlight the complex relationship humans have with nature’s more dangerous offerings.

Comment on Everything You Need to Know About Duck Eggs by Tiana https://modernfarmer.com/2015/06/everything-you-need-to-know-about-duck-eggs/#comment-75604 Thu, 29 Aug 2024 16:34:59 +0000 http://modernfarmer.com/?p=37199#comment-75604 My ducks occasionally have been laying their eggs in the low water dish. I have to have a low water dish because I have two very small ducks. But the bigger ducks are sitting in the smaller water dish and then laying their eggs inside it. My question is, if those eggs have been sitting in water for who knows how long, are they safe to eat? My thought is they probably are not.

Comment on Move Over, Mezcal. A Sustainable Tequila Alternative Is Taking Over. by SANDRO CÁNOVAS https://modernfarmer.com/2023/01/sotol/#comment-75576 Mon, 26 Aug 2024 23:14:23 +0000 https://modernfarmer.com/?p=148013#comment-75576 There is no bigger lie than saying that Sotol is more sustainable than Tequila & Mezcal. How is it possible that a plant that yields less and has longer natural cycles than agaves is gonna be the solution ? This narrative is crap and irresponsible. #defendamoselsotol

Comment on What a Trump or Harris Presidency Will Mean for Farmers and Eaters by CowDoc https://modernfarmer.com/2024/08/what-a-trump-or-harris-presidency-will-mean-for-farmers-and-eaters/#comment-75575 Mon, 26 Aug 2024 21:19:49 +0000 https://modernfarmer.com/?p=164104#comment-75575 Hoefner is a DC lobbyist, so it’s a stretch to say his assessment of the people he’s in touch with at USDA represent the sentiment of USDA across the country. I am regularly in touch with a variety of people at the USDA, and I can say that, under Biden, there was a huge morale boost,” says Hoefner. “People felt once again that they were able to address climate change and workers’ issues. They felt like the work they were doing is worthwhile.” I would expect DC employees to say that. I am a USDA employee. Rather than take a lobbyist’s opinion as fact to support their preference for Harris, I’d refer you to the annual “Best Places to work in Fed Gov.” the overall engagement/satisfaction score has stayed in high 50%-mid 60%
For almost 20 years. Quartriles compared to other large Fed agencies that year, based on Fed employee viewpoint surveys. The high quartile were Trump’s 1st 2 years before MRP Undersecretary changed telework policy around 2018 (tanked). I’m not a Trump supporter, but he’s setting opinion on a small sample size.
