During this period, it is easier to see where to prune since the trees have shed their leaves. Generally, late fall, winter, or early spring months are suitable for pruning.I always prune the fruit trees next to my tiny house in the winter.

I’m thinking of cutting them again, although it’s almost summer, then hiccup again from autumn?

I had tent worms in an apple tree at one time. You can actually see a tent like, cob webby looking area in your tree when they are the culprits.
I was instructed to wait until evening when all the worms would return to the tent, then cut away the branch and burn. This solved the problem for me. Hope it helps!

I prune them to keep them about 6-7 feet tall. so I can pick fruit without a ladder. We have had late frosts the last two years, and have had no fruit. I cover the trees, but still nothing. Any advice?

They should be pruned while sap is actively running. This helps to quickly seal the wounds (1 March to 1 Oct.) The University of Georgia and neighboring universities recommend this to avoid what is known as “peach short life.” Consult the SouthEastern Plum, Peach growers guide for details. See below.
