They don’t realize that once you own them, you are their sole provider. Those animals depend on you to provide food, water and attention. They are not something that roams around your yard and looks pretty. You are responsible for caring for them even when you don’t want to.

It’s so important to bring this issue to light. My husband and I run a modest homstead but we had a good idea what we were getting into. I grew up on a farm, so I grew up around chickens and other livestock.

A few of my friends are homesteaders as well and some are new to animal husbandry. While I’m happy to help and answer questions, I’m not a veterinarian. A couple of these people come to me for complex problems with their animals or even ask me to cull their animals for them. I’ll do it once or twice for someone, but if they are to be self-sufficient, they really need to learn how to do it themselves- or take the animal to a veterinarian. I’m not spoonfeeding anyone, but I won’t let an animal suffer either. It gets frustrating when some people get these livestock animals and are either unable or unwilling to cull it themselves.

You are insane. Right? What do too many chickens have to do with politicians other than all the “chicken” republicans that are afraid to go against the primal Trump. Your average rooster is at least Brave.

Guess your pie tins didn’t freeze over, so that’s a plus.

Well, you might try to go in springtime when the sweet peas are just ready to harvest. Great stuff! Your mourners will talk about you for years to come, saying “I haven’t had a good pea since Paula died.”

I pretty much agree with you, but I’d certainly save the flock of rare-breed chickens.

$30 per bird?? Listen, buddy, if you ever need a bridge, I’ve got one I might be willing to part with.

Third factor is one alluded to in other messages: a failure to recognize going into homesteading that the animals are not pets.
