The wild boars there are generally becoming a threat to agriculture, but in certain areas the problem is “life-threatening”. The boars can swim and have colonized some of the islands in Japan. On Kakara Island in Saga Prefecture the pigs now outnumber the people at 3 to 1 and may by now be even worse.Kids have to be driven to and from school and people are very careful when they are outside.People will soon have to abandon the place as the boars are destroying their agriculture and are becoming a menace. Futagami Jima, another island, has a worsening problem. Due to strict laws on gun ownership, people are not arming themselves to reduce the boar populations, so they continue to breed. In the Year of the Boar it is not likely much will be done (except in the Fukushima area – radioactive – where armed officials are trying to reduce an exploding population of destructive boars.
