Modern Farmer is focused on three pillars of the food system: food equity, conscious consumption, and sustainable farming in North America. Within those pillars, we are looking for human-centered stories that move beyond simply informing our community. We strive to inspire them to take action in their own lives, whether that’s to advocate for policy change, try a new method of composting, or shop differently at the grocery store.

We’d also love to hear your solution stories—stories that look at issues and problems from the perspective of the people working on the solution. Solution stories should provide context while centering the response to a problem. This means including the limitations of a proposed solution, if it’s been replicated elsewhere, and the evidence to show that it works.

Don’t worry though, we are still interested in the offbeat and fun stories that make up so much of agriculture and our food system!

We are looking for:

  • Stories that speak to people who care about where their food comes from, and how to participate in and help develop a more equitable food system for all;
  • Stories that offer insight or make a surprising connection around how a particular issue or topic impacts daily life;
  • Stories with alternative formats—pictures, video, audio, social collaborations, etc.

Compensation:

We pay writers based on story format and complexity, starting at a base rate of USD $350.
