An interesting point, and a valid one as long as we are not reverting to the 2nd Thessalonians 3:10 “you don’t work, you don’t eat” doctrine. The phrase “given the opportunity” is telling. I would point out that this article was written quite obviously by some abled person, blessed with leisure and personal vehicular transport. Such is not the good fortune of many Americans who suffer from food insecurity. Many also suffer from lack of mobility, lack of child care, and/or are differently abled. In any of those cases a day-trip to glean is not a possibility. If it were otherwise, no doubt such persons would welcome the opportunity to get out into the country, and help with the harvest.

Everyone who needs a food bank should have the opportunity to spend their time doing a job that allows them to earn Social Security and Medicare. They don’t need to be humiliated and punished and prevented from earning the safety nets we take for granted.
