Hi Sarah,
Thanks for sending in such a good question! I don’t know much yet about how protections differ across individual states/counties, but I’d love to know more about your situation! Feel free to email me at lena@modfarmer.com.

Hi Charles,
Thank you so much for this update about Maxx! It is wonderful to hear that thanks to CGPR, Providence Farm, and you and Lucy, he is now doing so well. These pictures are truly very special. Thanks for sharing Maxx’s happy ending with us!

Maxx has adjusted well to being the lead guard dog overseeing the night watch in our pasture. We lost a Great Pyrenees to cancer and the morning we put Finley down unknown to us Maxx was pulled from the shelter by CGPR. We had adopted through CGPR previously and had been in contact about Finley’s health. After Maxx was confirmed as an LGD at Providence Farm we adopted him with confidence that he was the right LGD for us. Hats of to CGPR and their collaborative efforts to save Maxx Thanks for bringing attention to the needs of these large breeds. The links contain pictures of Maxx taken recently. What county in Oregon are you in? I am in Jackson County and we are being targeted over our dogs with fines for barking. The previous animal control officer said our dogs didn’t fall under the noise ordinance. The new officer said 1. that the rules had recently changed, when I asked for documentation he pivoted to 2. The other officer was wrong. Basically my neighbor is harassing them so much they want me to re-home my dog.

I’m researching how to change laws around livestock guard dogs as I’ve witnessed an inhumane situation in Oregon and I came across your post. My local county won’t enforce anything because they are LGD. Do you have any information around these laws and what can be done? I’m trying to collect as much info as possible.

Covid encouraged many to get a dog and then people were surprised when they returned to work that their pets behavior changed. Many people don’t do their breed research. (Guardian dogs not only need to be trained but guard at night…Pyr are great at deterring coyotes but that also means alerting(barking). Not popular in suburbs to have a dog barking at 2 am
AND the big problem……people willing to rescue or puppy raise ( for guide and service dogs) now live with draconian rules (San Bernardino County max 2 pets…2 dogs or 1 dog 1 cat). I have 3 acres in San Diego County. When I bought my home the regs were 6 dogs per 1/2 acre. Now it’s 6 dogs per household. More? Requires a kennel license major use permits etc.($$$$$$$). I could help with more service and rescue but while we were not looking the county kept changing the rules. Just plain nuts! Why? To shut down puppy mills. Read up on farms in PA that have hundreds of caged dogs and are allowed to breed them uncensored. This all breaks my heart. AND responsible breeders are not the problem. Their contracts insist on being notified if a pup of theirs needs to be surrendered.
Not long ago a veteran became homeless. Asked xxxxxxx to foster his dog until he could get back on his feet. Of course xxxxxx wanted to but one dog over the county limit would have forced them to become a kennel (estimate 35k w major use permit).

There has to be a better answer and balance.

This is a human problem not training, researching etc and these precious dogs are the victims.

She’s in good shape, but we want another Pyr that she can train. Ours work in our apple orchard and protects our chickens. I just told my vet that if he knows of Pyr that needs to be rehomed, to contact me. I want to bring in another before I lose my Pyr and her opportunity to train the new recruit. We will be sad to lose her; she’s a well loved dog who loves her job.
