This myth originated in Australia, where there are signs that read “NO TIPPING”, Tipping there means dumping trash. It is impossible to tip a cow without several roping horses and riders, or a Squeeze , which is what every rancher in the American west uses. It is in a runway out of the corral. The cattle are moved into it, without horses. There is a gate on both sides of the squeeze. The downstream on is closed and the upstream one is opened for the next cow. When it enters, the upstream gate is closed and the squeeze is, well squeezed. It moves in from the sides, hydraulically on upscale operations, then it is rotated 90 degrees so the cow is on its side, three feet of the ground. Inoculations, ear tags, brands, hormone injections are done in moments. Next please!
You can’t get near most range cattle except on a horse. And you risk being cowkicked. Unlike horses, who are limited to kicking mostly straight back, cows can do a sideways kick. It ain’t fun. I speak from experience.

I grew up next to a dairy farm. I didn’t hear about cow-tipping until I was in my 20’s. I think Mr Sussmann would have taken extreme measures if he found people assaulting his herd.

One thing people forget to mention when talking about this is that until a cow goes to REM sleep they are in light sleep STANDING UP and rock back and forwards whilst in this position. This makes the cows almost weightless and extremely easy to tip. Not that anyone should do this as causes damage and distress to the animal.

My family had a few dairy cows on our grain farm back until the late 1970s. I milked them evenings (my Dad milked them mornings) for a few years, before I left for college. I don’t recall hearing about cow tipping until after I finished college. I would never have engaged in it; our cows did not expect it, and worked for free.
Oh, you mean THAT kind of tipping. No, didn’t happen. There may have been some cows sleeping while standing on the rare occasion when we had to put them inside in tight quarters when the winter weather was too cold, but in all cases I can remember for sure, they lay down to sleep.
