Mangalica is a Hungarian breed of pig that is pasture raised due to being herded when the tribes traveled. It is not Serbian at all and is a registered and patented Hungarian breed.

Is the meat gamey? Is there anywhere to purchase this meat to try?

I tried Mangalitsa pork a couple months ago and while highly excited to try it due to its reputation, I have to say that it was very tough and no different than Walmart pork. I was disappointed. The man who butchered the pig mentioned that it had no fat ring around its midsection, quite unusual he said.
Perhaps the farmer who raised it did so with plain feed from the co-op. But I didn’t want to embarrass him, so I said nothing. But $10 for a pork sandwich was a price I was willing to pay for a taste of this vaunted swine flesh. Oh well, guess I’ll have to wait for another opportunity. I have an AGH boar and two KuneKune/AGH mix gilts. The problem is it takes too long for them to grow out. 12-15 months is twice as long as Berkshire, Duroc, Hampshire and most commercial breeds. Once my pigs are bred, I plan to introduce Berkshire and Duroc genetics. I may also get a Landrace and a Chester White gilt for their maternal habits. Hoping I get a chance to taste another Mangalitsa that expresses the flavor it’s known for.

That’s what I’m researching now… the breeder we bought our pigs from suggests anywhere between 1 year and 18 months to expose.
