It’s likely that consumer prices more accurately reflect the true cost of production and farmers are still able to make a living.

The US spends the lowest percentage of household income on food prepared at home. We’ve been sold a lie about the true cost of food.

When the Federal Gov’t. has completely shot their creditworthiness with ludicrous, totally unrepayable levels of outstanding debt ( over $33 Trillion now ), then U.S. farmers will be doing the same: no insurance help or subsidies of any kind. The rapidly rising Treasury interest rates in the last couple months signal that we are probably close to that point. The rate of rise has never been so high.
Farmers could still buy insurance to spread their risk; it will merely cost approx. 160% more unsubsidized, so I suspect some covered items, such as price and prevent-plant would be chosen less often. It would probably go back to basic crop failure insurance.
Good, balanced article, by the way.
